Over de Coton de Tulear is in de loop der jaren door ons al veel gesproken en geschreven. Het is een heerlijk en veelzijdig ras. Altijd vrolijk, in voor een geintje, maar ook rustig in huis als het moet. Gek op kinderen en mensen. De vacht vergt wel enig onderhoud, dus weet waar je aan begint. Ze zijn stevig, kunnen tegen een stootje en hebben een goed uithoudingsvermogen. Sport en spel doen ze graag, gehoorzaamheidscursus doorlopen ze goed.

De Coton de Tulear.

Een dappere Dodo uit de Indische Oceaan.

Inleiding.

Als gevolg van de kolonisaties in de 16e en 17e eeuw is de Dodo, een groot soort kalkoenachtige vogel die leefde op de eilanden van de Indische Oceaan, uitgestorven. Als gevolg van diezelfde kolonisatie is hiervoor in de plaats een andere soort dappere Dodo in de Indische Oceaan ontstaan in de vorm van de Coton de Tulear.

Geschiedenis.

De Coton de Tulear vindt zijn oorsprong op Madagaskar. Over het ontstaan van dit ras doen twee verhalen de ronde. Het eerste is een legende, tijdens een orkaan rond de 15e -16e eeuw zou er voor de kust van Madagaskar een schip vergaan zijn. De aanwezige hondjes van dit schip zouden zwemmend de kust hebben bereikt en zich vermengd hebben met de plaatselijke honden.

De tweede en meer aannemelijke versie verhaalt over de tijden van de grote scheepvaart naar de “oost” en de kolonisatie periode. Er waren op de schepen vaak kleine hondjes aan boord voor gezelschap of om cadeau te doen en hondjes om de ratten te vangen aan boord.

Deze hondjes afkomstig van de schepen, Bichons, Papillon en Bedlington terrier, hebben zich vermengd met lokale hondjes en zo is de Coton de Tulear ontstaan.

Verdere verloop.

De hondjes leefden in grote groepen op het eiland, vooral rond de havenstad Toliari. Daar hun vacht er uitzag als een katoenpluis werden ze genoemd Coton de Tulear.

Er waren roedels die in de oerwouden leefden, maar er waren ook roedels die zich bij de plaatselijke bevolking ophielden. Ze konden goed jagen, luid blaffend joegen ze de prooi op en beten in de achilles pezen van hun prooi. Altijd luid blaffend opererend in een roedel. Dit is heden ten dage nog terug te vinden bij de Coton. Vooral degene die er meerdere bezitten zullen ervaren dat er een grote samenwerking is binnen een roedel. De Coton voelt zich dan ook het beste thuis binnen een harmonische roedel.

Het bleken gezonde hondjes te zijn met een sterke persoonlijkheid.

Het verhaal gaat verder dat ze hierom als cadeau werden aangeboden door de lokale bevolking aan de koning en de edelen van het eiland als er gunsten nodig waren. Deze waren zo verrukt van de hondjes dat er een wet kwam die het de gewone mensen verbood om een Coton te bezitten. Dit was alleen toegestaan voor de edelen. Zo werd de Coton de Tulear de Royal Dog of Madagaskar.

In 1966 heeft L. Petit, voorzitter van de Canine Society of Madagascar de standaard opgesteld voor de Coton. Deze werd in 1969 erkend en door de FCI in 1970. Er mochten nu officieel mondjes maat Cotons geëxporteerd worden naar Frankrijk. In 1972 werd de eerste Coton uitgebracht op een tentoonstelling. Inmiddels heeft Frankrijk de patronage over de standaard.

BREF APERÇU HISTORIQUE : Introduit en France bien avant sa reconnaissance officielle en 1970, ce nouveau venu d’origine malgache a rapidement acquis une place de premier plan parmi les chiens d’agrément de ce pays ; aujourd’hui il est répandu dans le monde entier.

ASPECT GÉNÉRAL : Petit chien de compagnie à poil long, de couleur blanche et de texture cotonneuse, aux yeux ronds, foncés et à l’expression vive et intelligente.

PROPORTIONS IMPORTANTES :• La hauteur au garrot se rapporte à la hauteur du corps comme 2 à 3.• La longueur de la tête se rapporte à celle du corps comme 2 à 5.• La longueur du crâne se rapporte à celle du museau comme 9 à 5.

COMPORTEMENT / CARACTÈRE : De caractère gai, stable, très sociable avec les humains et avec ses congénères, il s’adapte parfaitement à tout style de vie. Le caractère du Coton de Tuléar est une des caractéristiques principales de la race.

TÊTE : Courte, vue de dessus : triangulaire.

RÉGION CRÂNIENNE : Crâne : Vu de face légèrement bombé ; assez large par rapport à sa longueur. Arcades sourcilières peu développées. Léger sillon frontal. Protubérance et crête occipitales peu accentuées. Arcades zygomatiques bien développées.

Stop : Peu accentué

RÉGION FACIALE :

Truffe : Dans le prolongement du chanfrein ; noire, la couleur marron est tolérée ; narines bien ouvertes.

Museau : Droit.

Lèvres : Fines, tendues, de la couleur de la truffe.

Mâchoires / dents : Dents bien alignées ; articulé en ciseau, en pince ou articulé inversé sans perte de contact ; l’absence des PM1 n’est pas pénalisable ; les M3 ne sont pas prises en considération.

Joues : Sèches.Yeux : Plutôt ronds, foncés, vifs, bien écartés ; le bord des paupières est pigmenté de noir ou de marron selon la couleur de la truffe.

Oreilles : Tombantes, triangulaires, attachées haut sur le crâne, fines à l’extrémité ; portées accolées aux joues, elles atteignent la commissure des lèvres. Recouvertes de poils blancs ou avec quelques traces de couleur gris clair (mélange de poils blancs et de poils noirs donnant un aspect gris clair) ou aubérisé (mélange de poils blancs et de poils fauves donnant un aspect aubérisé).

COU : Bien musclé, légèrement galbé. Encolure bien attachée. Rapport encolure / corps : 1/5. Peau bien tendue, sans fanon.

CORPS :

Vue d’ensemble : Ligne du dessus très légèrement convexe. Chien plus long que haut.

Garrot : Peu accentué.

Dos et rein : Dos ferme, dessus très légèrement voussé. Rein bien musclé.

Croupe : Oblique, courte et musclée.

Poitrine : Bien développée, bien descendue au niveau des coudes, longue, côtes bien arrondies.

Ventre : Remonté mais pas levretté.

QUEUE : Attachée bas, dans l’axe de la colonne vertébrale.• Au repos : descendant en dessous du jarret, l’extrémité étant relevée.• En mouvement : Portée « gaiement » (recourbée au dessus du dos, la pointe dirigée vers la nuque, le garrot, le dos ou le rein). Chez les sujets à fourrure abondante, l’extrémité peut être appuyée sur la région dorso-lombaire.

MEMBRES ANTÉRIEURS :

Vue d’ensemble : Les antérieurs sont d’aplomb.

Épaules et bras : Épaule oblique, musclée. Angle scapulo-huméral : environ 120°. La longueur de l’humérus correspond sensiblement à celle de l’omoplate.

Avant-bras : Angle huméro-radial : environ 120° ; avant-bras verticaux et parallèles, bien musclés, avec une bonne ossature ; la longueur de l’avant-bras correspond sensiblement à celle du bras.

Carpe : Dans le prolongement de la ligne de l’avant-bras.

Métacarpe : Solide ; vu de profil, très légèrement fléchi.

Pieds antérieurs : Petits, de forme ronde ; doigts serrés, cambrés ; coussinets pigmentés. MEMBRES POSTÉRIEURS :

Vue d’ensemble : Les postérieurs sont d’aplomb. Sans être recherchée, la présence d’ergots n’est pas pénalisée.

Cuisse : Fortement musclée ; angle coxo-fémoral environ 80%.

Jambe : Oblique, formant avec le fémur un angle d’environ 120°.

Jarret : Sec, bien dessiné ; angle du jarret environ 160°.

Métatarse : Vertical.

Pieds postérieurs : Petits, de forme ronde ; doigts serrés, cambrés ; coussinets pigmentés.

ALLURES : Libres et faciles, sans couvrir beaucoup de terrain ; en action le dessus reste ferme et le chien ne flotte pas dans ses allures.

PEAU : Fine, bien tendue sur tout le corps ; de couleur rose elle peut être pigmentée.

ROBE

POIL : C’est l’une des principales caractéristiques de la race puisque son nom même en découle. Très doux et souple, cotonneux, jamais dur ni rêche, le poil est dense, abondant et peut être très légèrement ondulé. 

COULEUR : Couleur de fond : blanche.Quelques traces de couleur gris clair (mélange de poils blancs et de poils noirs) ou aubérisé (mélange de poils blancs et de poils fauves) sont admises sur les oreilles. De telles traces peuvent être tolérées sur les autres régions du corps, pour autant qu’elles n’altèrent pas l’aspect général de blancheur de la robe ; elles ne sont pas cependant recherchées.

TAILLE ET POIDS :

Taille : Mâles : de 26 à 28 cm, tolérance 2 cm en plus et 1 cm en moins.         Femelles : de 23 cm à 25 cm, tolérance 2 cm en plus et 1 cm en moins.

Poids : Mâles : de 4 à un maximum de 6 kg.         Femelles : de 3,5 à un maximum de 5 kg.

DÉFAUTS : Tout écart par rapport à ce qui précède doit être considéré comme un défaut qui sera pénalisé en fonction de sa gravité.

DÉFAUTS GRAVES : • Crâne : Plat ou trop bombé ; crâne étroit.• Museau : Disproportion du rapport crâne / chanfrein.• Yeux : Clairs, yeux trop en amande ; entropion, ectropion ; yeux proéminents.• Oreilles : Trop courtes, insuffisance de la longueur du poil, oreilles rejetées en arrière (en rose).• Cou : Trop court, dans les épaules, fluet.• Ligne de dessus : Trop voussée, ensellée.• Croupe : Horizontale, étroite.• Épaule : Droite.• Membres : Panards, cagneux, coudes décollés, jarrets trop ouverts ou clos, angulations droites.• Poil : Trop court, trop ondulé, bouclé.• Pigmentation : Partielle ou trop claire des paupières ou des lèvres ; truffe décolorée, traces de ladre.

DÉFAUTS ÉLIMINATOIRES : T

ype général :• Manque de type (insuffisance de caractères ethniques qui fait que l’animal dans son ensemble ne ressemble plus suffisamment à ses congénères de la même race).• Taille et Poids en dehors des limites et tolérances du standard.

Points particuliers dans le type :• Chanfrein : busqué.• Yeux : Exorbités avec signes de nanisme, trop clairs, yeux vairons.• Oreilles : Dressées ou semi-dressées.• Queue : N’atteignant pas le jarret ; attachée haut ; enroulée complètement (formant une boucle serrée) ; plaquée sur le dessus ou contre la cuisse ; en chandelle ; anourie.

Robe :• Poil : Atypique, frisé, laineux, soyeux.• Robe : Fortement tachée ; toute tache d’un noir franc.• Pigmentation : Absence totale de pigmentation d’une paupière ou de la truffe ou des lèvres.

Anomalies :• Prognathisme supérieur ou inférieur avec perte de contact ; béance verticale des incisives.• Manque de dents : À l’exception des PM1, les M3 n’étant pas prises en considération.• Sujet agressif ou extrêmement craintif.

N.B. : Les mâles doivent avoir deux testicules d’apparence normale, complètement descendus dans le scrotum.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY : Introduced to France long before its official recognition in 1970, this newcomer from Madagascar quickly acquired a prominent position amongst the companion dogs of this country; today it is widespread all over the world.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Small, long-haired, companion dog with a white cotton textured coat, with round,  dark eyes and a lively, intelligent expression.

IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS :

· The height at the withers in relationship to the length of the body is 2  to 3.

· The length of the head in relationship to that of the body is 2 to 5.

· The length of the skull in relationship to that of the muzzle is 9 to 5.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Of a happy temperament, stable, very sociable with humans and with other dogs; it adapts perfectly to all ways of life.  The temperament of the Coton de Tuléar is one of the main characteristics of the breed.

HEAD : Short, seen from above triangular.

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Seen from the front slightly rounded; rather wide in relation to its length.  Superciliary arches only slightly developed.  Slight frontal groove.  Occipital protuberance and crest only slightly accentuated.  Well developed zygomatic arches.

Stop : Slight.

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : In the extension of the nasal bridge; black;  brown is tolerated; nostrils wide open.

Muzzle : Straight.

Lips : Fine, tight, of the same colour as the nose.

Jaws/Teeth : Teeth well aligned.  Scissor bite, pincer bite or inverted bite without losing contact.  The absence of  the PM1 is not penalised; the M3s are not taken into consideration.

Cheeks : Lean.

Eyes : Rather rounded, dark, lively, wide apart; the rims of the eyelids are well pigmented with black or brown according to the colour of the nose.

Ears : Pendulous, triangular, high set on the skull, fine at the tips; carried close to the cheeks,  reaching the corners of the lips.  Covered with white hairs or with some traces of light grey (mixture of white and black hairs giving a light grey appearance) or red-roan (mixture of white and fawn hairs giving a red-roan appearance – lemon).

NECK : Well muscled, slightly arched.  Neck well set into shoulders.  Proportion of neck to body = 1/5.  Clean neck with no dewlap.

BODY : Topline very slightly convex.  Dog longer than high.

Withers : Only  slightly pronounced.

Back and loin : Strong back, topline very slightly arched.  Loin well muscled. 

Croup : Oblique, short and muscled.

Chest : Well developed, well let down to elbow level, long.  Ribs well sprung.

Belly : Tucked up but not excessively.

TAIL : Low set, in the axis of the spinal column.

· At rest : carried below the hock, the tip being raised.

· On the move : Carried « gaily » curved over the back, with the point towards the nape, the withers, the back or the loin.  In dogs with abundant coat, the tip may rest on the dorsal-lumbar region.

LIMBS FOREQUARTERS :  The frontlegs are upright.

Shoulder and upper arm : Oblique shoulder, muscled.  Scapulo-humeral angle about 120°. The length of the upper arm corresponds approximatively to that of the shoulder blade.

Lower arm : Lower arms vertical and parallel, well muscled, with good bone.  The length of the  lower arm corresponds approximatively to that of the upper arm.

Carpus (Pastern joint) : A continuation of the line of the lower arm.

Metacarpals (Pastern) : Strong, seen in profile sloping very slightly.

Forefeet : Small, round, toes tight, arched; pads pigmented.

HINDQUARTERS : The hindlegs are upright.  Though dewclaws are not sought after, their presence is  not penalised.

Upper thigh : Strongly muscled; coxo-femoral angle about 80°.

Lower thigh : Oblique, forming with the femur an angle of about 120°.

Hock joint : Dry, well defined, angle of the hock about 160°.

Metatarsals (Rear pasterns): Vertical.

Hind feet : Similar to forefeet.

GAIT / MOVEMENT  : Free and flowing, without covering a lot of ground;  topline retained on the move. No sign of uneven movement.

SKIN : Fine, stretched tight over all the body; although of pink colour, it can be pigmented.

COAT HAIR : This is one of the main characteristics of the breed from which its very  name derives.  Very soft and supple, with the texture of cotton, never hard or rough, the coat is dense, profuse and can be very slightly wavy.

COLOUR : Ground colour : White. A few slight shadings of light grey colour (mixture of white and black hairs) or of red-roan (mixture of white and fawn hairs), are permitted on the ears.  On the other parts of the body, such shadings can be tolerated, if they do not alter the general appearance of  white coat.  They are however not sought after.

SIZE AND WEIGHT  :

Height at withers :

Males :  26-28 cm, tolerance of 2 cm above  

  and 1 cm below.

Females :  23-25 cm, tolerance of 2 cm above  

  and 1 cm below.

Weight :

Males : From 4 kg to a maximum of 6 kg.

Females : From 3,5 kg to a maximum of 5 kg.

FAULTS : Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.

SERIOUS FAULTS :

· Skull : Flat or too domed, narrow.

· Muzzle : Disproportion between skull and muzzle.

· Eyes : Light, too almond shaped; entropion, ectropion, prominent eyes.

· Ears : Too short, with insufficient length of hair; ears folding backwards (rose ear).

· Neck : Too short, too stuffy in shoulder, too slender.

· Topline : Too arched, sway backed.

· Croup : Horizontal, narrow.

· Shoulder : Straight.

· Limbs : Turned inwards or outwards; out at elbows; hocks wide set or too close; straight angulations.

· Hair : Too short, too wavy, curly.

· Pigmentation : Partially lacking or too light pigmentation of eyelids or lips; discoloured nose, with unpigmented areas.

ELIMINATING FAULTS : General type :

· Lack of  type (insufficient breed characteristics which means that the animal on the whole does not sufficiently resemble other examples of the breed).

· Size and weight outside the requirements and tolerance of the standard.Particular points :

· Foreface : Bridge of nose convex.

· Eyes : Bulging, with signs of dwarfism; too light; wall eyes.

· Ears : Pricked or semi-pricked.

· Tail : Not reaching to hock; high set, completely curled (forming a tight ring); carried flat on the back or against the thighs; carried candle like; tailless.

· Hair : Atypical, rightly curled, woolly, silky.

· Colour : Heavily marked; any marking of a definite black.

· Pigmentation : Total lack of pigment on eyerims,  nose or lips.Anomalies :

· Overshot or undershot mouth with lack of contact between the incisors; vertical gaping of the incisors.

· Absence of teeth other than the PM1 or the M3s.

· Aggressive or extremely shy specimen.N.B. : Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
